There are so many things someone could blame problems in modern society on but I guess we gotta bust out the ol' online porn, violent video games, and other debunked theories.

There's a weird sub-culture which believes that erectile dysfunction (ED) is linked to pornography. As is likely no surprise to anyone, this study shows it isn't. The only variable which is here is anxiety.

statology.org/moderating-varia If you don't understand what she means by "moderates", this resource might help you.

Noting that it's not just "sex education" in schools which can be pretty bad but that parents might not be interested in talking about that.

Hmm? So, a "conservative think tank" has a poll which indicates the majority of people are in support of "age verification"?

Have they considered selection bias and framing?

ACLU files lawsuit against Indiana for preventing someone from recording police from within 25 feet of them.

They argue it violates the First Amendment (which it does).

Apparently, that game from your childhood, Neopets, is under new management and they're going to revive it.

@jdp23 U.S. based instances which deal with taboo art but maybe curb bigotry might be useful in particular to provide local services which are better at moderating people from particular countries.

Apparently, *they* are doing *something*, because there are people complaining about them going around suspending accounts for no reason. More lower quality moderation.

Ugh, maybe, they should collaborate with other instances which do similar things? In any case, I think they've worn out their utility. Artists started leaving quite some time ago.

I'm a bit worried about the new pattern of hyper-centralization (and the weird fediverse aversion of some to U.S.-based services which also cater to art, but have decent moderation practices, and might help to distribute that load, some of it seems to stem from sexphobia).

As for why a service might have trouble, the main theory I can come up with is the literally millions of people pouring into the fediverse. Anything past that would be pretty speculative.

ij.org/case/detroit-retaliatio This lawsuit is interesting.

Apparently, he filed a lawsuit against Wayne County's civil forfeiture practices, and to try to intimidate him from continuing the lawsuit, they kept trying to pin bogus felony charges on him (which a judge kept dismissing).

Now, he is also suing them for violating the First Amendment.

Appeals Court decides that woman who had $8k seized through civil forfeiture, without being charged with a crime, should be given more leeway in meeting deadlines to file documents in order to try to get it back.

theguardian.com/technology/201 As a reminder, this is the country which says they would be reasonable in censoring social media. The United Kingdom.

Here, there's a huge battle over... Users posting information about celebrities which is already in the public domain and well-known.

Apparently, KOSA's "knowledge standard" has changed from "reasonably likely to be used by a minor" to knowing that minors use your site.

The obvious problem with this (as pointed out by others) is that:

a) If a site simply knows that minors have been known to use their site, that could be grounds for state harassment.

b) As others have pointed out, if the moderation isn't perfect (particularly when it comes to removing a particular minor from a platform), or gets circumvented, that particular minor might be used in evidence and that *might* lead to liability.

This might be a problem for very large platforms.

c) Older minors are not the same as younger ones and any standard here is going to be a bit of an one size fits all solution.

d) There is still a big chilling effect on freedom of expression.

After reading some articles from @fsf I decided to do a social research about user freedoms. Here are few questions below:
1️⃣Is it important for you whether you can view source code of programs you use daily, or not?
2️⃣Whether you can compile them from sources or ask a person you trust, to compile it for you?
3️⃣Do you want an option to use web application to run with different back-end?
4️⃣Do you want an option to use web application with different or customized user experience or user interface?

Is there a way to do superscript on here (for citations)?
