https://veilid.com/ Serious question. Why would someone have this ultra privacy project but then have like just a Discord (which isn't exactly great for privacy)? #Veilid
The ironic thing is that the copyright expiring will probably give it far more publicity than it would get rusting away in Disney's vault, lol.

Ironically, it's probably piracy which aided in marketing and breaking up really localized adaptations which were hard to differentiate from American content (why they were so scared of exposing people to other cultures is really beyond me, the most infamous example was editing out Japanese food items in Pokemon...). Also, the silly "cartoons are for kids" cliché.
Ultimately the fight for privacy, security, and thus freedom of expression and association will be won't be won in a courtroom or a legislature.
It will be won my people making a choice that those values are worth actively protecting.
Every time someone localizes cwtch for a new language, or submits an anonymous bug report, or simply reaches out over ephemeral wires to say hi, I remember why we continue to do this work.
I was literally just thinking of @sarahjamielewis then moments later she appeared :o
@DrSeltsam I can imagine it being very hard to keep likes / boosts synchronized, especially without producing a lot of traffic.
Synchronization isn't one of the hard problems in computing for nothing.

2023 was somewhat of a Red Queen's Race for #privacy, #p2p, #decentralization
At the end of it I feel like we had to run much faster just to stay in the same place.
Much like the rest of the space, funding for @openprivacy and @cwtch took a hit, and we have to continue to squeeze ever more out of the amazing support we do get.
When I look at where Cwtch is now compared to a few years ago I couldn't be prouder.
So much more to do, so many better worlds to build.
@orsinium @lukeshu With #7, someone could probably avoid federating a few 3D tags (if that is what they're aiming for), as it seems fairly well moderated.
Quite a few of these are probably restricted because of trolls. Might be a tad nuclear, maybe. Though, seems more justified.
Anyway, a lot of cases seem to be the same old story where someone has an itchy finger, and like, maybe more people (especially very new people) running large servers is not necessarily a good thing, if you're going to get a home owners association.

No, not Stop Gitlab, Stop Gilab. GILAB. It's an overly broad South African "national security" bill.
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/12/no-nudity-allowed-censoring-naked-yoga This one is from 2022. British activist tears into the censorship of naked yoga (strangely specific cause to pick up, but yeah, censorship is bad).
Since I also saw someone coming up with a spooky story (of how censorship can be a terrible thing), I thought I'd add one of my mine.
I encountered a pretty spooky and creepy coincidence once. So, there were discussions of censorship (and something about legality in some very random backwater country) involving "fictional minors", then, shortly afterwards (I'd say within a few weeks or so), someone (who was there and wasn't keen on censorship) turned up dead. Suicide. In that very country. Very eerie.
Anyway, I don't think we particularly need stories of self-harm or suicide to get to the, rather evident, point that Censorship Of Artistic Expression Is A Bad Thing.
In any case, with things like suicide, it can feel very surreal. Someone is talking normally one day (well, actually week in this case, but you get the saying), like any ordinary person. Then, they are no longer there. So, I guess be good to one another, yes, yes.

Another highlight from 2023, lol.
Ah, yes, wrong term. Not accuracy. Quality is the word. I talk a lot about classifiers, so I got those two muddled up.
"Depending on which late-model vehicle you own, your car might be watching you – literally and figuratively – as you drive down the road. It’s watching you with cameras that monitor the cabin and track where you’re looking, and with sensors that track your speed, lane position and rate of acceleration."
"Your car may also transmit some of this data to the manufacturer’s data centers"
"The information can reveal your identity, your habits when you’re in your car, how safely you drive, where you’ve been and where you regularly go."
Highlight from 2023. Suicide hotlines were sending user data (including names and email addresses) to Facebook. #privacy
