Appears I’m in the mood to spend money tonight fill in my physical anime catalog a little tonight. A essentials copy of Eureka Seven, Melancholoy of Haruhi Suzumiya, New Game, and Hanebado. #animr

Curiously, some stats show the fediverse shrinking for the past few days, although with how things are going, we can probably expect another surge soon.

Apparently, Minds is joining the fediverse.

#FediTips for newbies like me: #hashtag your posts! There's no algorithm on #Mastodon, so the only people who see your posts by default are the people who already follow you. Well, them and the brave souls in the local and federated timelines. 🫡

Just a few topic hashtags on a post can make a huge difference in how many people will see you, like you, reply to you, and boost you. If you want people to know what you're up to, hashtag it!

Something I'm going to note is that one drug is not necessarily interchangeable for another.

A drug might have more unpleasant side-effects than another or it might otherwise not be as suitable.

"During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) allowed physicians to prescribe controlled substances via telehealth appointments; at the same time, parents began noticing symptoms of inattentiveness in their kids who were stuck at home attending school over Zoom. As a result, ADHD diagnoses soared among children."

"State and local governments sued the three largest pharmaceutical distributors and Johnson & Johnson over claims that the companies had contributed to opioid abuse and deaths. In February 2022, the companies settled for $26 billion and cracked down on potentially suspicious orders of controlled substances from independent pharmacies. As a result, many pharmacies were limited in the drugs they were able to order; some were banned altogether."

"the DEA declined to raise the limits in 2023 that would allow manufacturers to make more Adderall, even in the face of a declared shortage. Meanwhile, a lawsuit filed by state and local governments caused pharmaceutical distributors to cut off the supply of drugs like Adderall to pharmacies across the country."

Apparently, there is now an "instance" which is basically just an AP gateway for RSS feeds (although, a real RSS reader would probably better).

I'm seeing person after person getting confused about profiles which haven't been fully federated.

I prefer tags to things like CWs, although CWs are still overused.

"for every study maligning porn, another clears its name"
That is because it is (or was) subject to the scientific bandwagon effect where someone felt compelled to look for all kinds of "links" to "bad things".

And then, someone else has to come in with a better methodology to correct that.

A meta analysis from 2020 of 59 studies which tried to look for a link between pornography and sex crimes and couldn't find one.

It found studies which found a "link" failed to control for factors which might make it appear as if there is a link when there is not.

They also found tell-tale signs of p hacking and citation bias.

Studies which followed best practices didn't find this.
Population level studies showed more pornography was associated with lower crime.

They closed by calling for more research to be done.

It's interesting one researcher is from Texas given how anti-porn the politicians can be there.

For the record, if you're making a choice between md5 / sha1 / sha256 and some flavor of Argon 2 for a password hashing algorithm, just pick Argon 2.

Help make the world that bit more secure.

For context (I covered it earlier), Microsoft had their algorithm write news articles about tourist hot spots and they published them (for some unfathomable reason).

For delicious local foods at Montreal, it recommended a hamburger at McDonalds.

Imagine naming a fedi instance "shut up" in another language.

Meanwhile at the Ottawa Food Bank, a horde of tourists walk in lol (joke)
