I'm seeing... Plenty of follower counts going down on X. That is usually indicative of people leaving.

The tricky thing with highly opinionated projects I think, whether Pleroma on usability or Mastodon on functionality, is that it's not like you can just open a pull request and solve that problem in one go.

Otherwise, if it's just lacking this or that, that is easy to solve.

That's another problem I think.

The software which are most widely used for larger instances are also ironically less suited for doing so due to performance issues.

Meanwhile, more performant stacks are instead used for small or even single user instances, which largely moots the point of using that stack in the first place.

Go To Social: From what I've seen of it in the wild, it behaves unpredictably on the fediverse and is very buggy in federation.

It also throws out Go's potential performance advantages by just using it as another tool for single user instances.

It also looks very alpha.

A few observations:

Mastodon: Hard to install, very resource intensive, very opinionated (i.e. over asinine things like character limits).

Pleroma: Poor usability. More functional.

Misskey: Sort of okay. It has some interesting features and the usability looks alright? The way it handles visibility is different than other systems leading to unpredictable results.

I have to look deeper into this implementation.

Every time I hear of them, it has to do with, ironically, complaining about NSFW content on the fediverse (is it really that surprising that someone will use it for this?).

I also have potential concerns about language / cultural barriers here.

What kind of struck me about Pleroma is that in one interview, the lead developer was kind of proud of it's poorer usability (as it'll presumably keep the corporate riffraff away).

Various things I noticed while doing a round of research.

From what I can tell, Pleroma is likely a reference to Ancient Greek. There, it means fullness or completeness.

In more modern times, it is more used in reference to God.
