Nextcloud's docs say that turning on server-side encryption increases file sizes by 35%. The most likely explanation is that they're storing encrypted files as base64. Are they really that stupid?

It appears that you are right that they are base64-encoding the blocks: docs.nextcloud.com/server/late

Seems an odd choice, but apparently it's a standard option in PHP's openssl_encrypt.
