Any recommendations on a baby monitor that does audio and video?

I'm assuming this crowd has parents that don't want a security hole in their child's nursery and thus already did the research for me. 😉

@brettcannon This is the one we bought, very basic, runs over local RF: amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00ECHYTBI

We broke one after about two years and bought a new one, which we just gave away to family members (ones we like) recently.

As far as I know you can't use it to record video or audio. It has a talk button that is sometimes useful, but also sometimes used to freak out our older one.

Range was decent (though not compared to an internet-connected device). We could go outside when we lived in a townhouse in NY, and when we had a big suburban house it reached the whole thing plus the yards.

@brettcannon I seem to remember @glyph might have gotten the same one? Or considered it?

@pganssle @brettcannon i think we had one that was VTech branded, but current vtech models don’t look like it, and this one does, so perhaps it’s a white-label thing. Ours had some language on the box about an encrypted signal which i don’t see at a glance here, but yeah: just RF, not wifi

@glyph @pganssle Thanks! You're not the only person recommending VTech and it's actually sold here, so it doesn't look ridiculously expensive.

@pganssle @brettcannon +1 Infant Optics. Ours has lasted six years and two kids. You want non-wifi and the battery-powered monitor because there is no delay and the peace of mind that an internet outage won't disrupt it. You want reliable tech over features.

We use a Wyze pan cam (the one you can move) for $35 as our backup/remote and have it mounted too. It's the best quality, cheap, and works on Android/iOS. You don't need a subscription to use it.

@brettcannon I hear good things about vtech too. I bought a few for a niece and nephew when they had kids too.

@brettcannon @pganssle does camelcamelcamel.com/ work for the Canadian website? If so, I'd set a price watch and check your email over the upcoming holiday sale time.

Same for a VTech model which I hear good things about too. Worse case, find a US friend to proxy and ship 💁

@webology @brettcannon @pganssle I think it works on all Amazon websites, I used in on the French and Spanish ones without problems.
