Looks like my old ThinkPad T480 has or is finally dying. Anyone have strong feelings about a native replacement?

I have been leaning towards a Framework because I like their philosophy, but I have heard System76 makes some nice machines as well.

I guess now is also the time to think about stuff that is built to run LLMs locally?

New framework model ships "December". I do not want to go a whole month without a computer... Hopefully I can maybe get my ThinkPad working, but the "charging" light doesn't even turn on when I plug it in, which I think is a very bad sign.

@pganssle I think about that Framework Desktop quite a bit because of the unified bus + 128G of RAM at 1/3 the price or more of the Mac Studio of the same specs. That's obviously not a ThinkPad in terms of portability, but I think about this machine a lot.

@webology Hah, yeah I need a laptop, I already have a pile of desktops.

@pganssle I know a dozen friends with Frameworks who seem to like them. They had a stability issue with one model (2 models ago?) but I think that's been worked out. I probably love the format more than the machines themselves, but I'm on Mac with no plans of switching.

I think anyone coming from a ThinkPad might have firm opinions about keyboards and the feel though that's worth considering before getting a Framework.

@pganssle framework is a right leaning company politically you might not want to support them.

@pganssle I would have unreservedly suggested Framework about 6 months ago, but now after the poor handling of their engagement with dhh (that dhh), I'm very much more reserved about them. I'm sad about that.

@pganssle It might depend on where you are located:
#System76 within US
#starlabs within UK
#tuxedocomputers or #slibmook in EU
😊
