Ran across this on social media

"I just used ChatGPT to generate a 300 character regex for me, saved me an hour.

TBH if you aren’t using it that seems like a skill issue."

And it’s a perfect example of what I mean when I say that “AI” tools are a fundamentally conservative force

It will never tell you that your bad idea is bad. Doing even minimal research would force you to at least _consider_ the possibility that this might be a bad idea with long term consequences about the maintainability of your project. ChatGPT will never do that.

It will never tell you that you’ve made a fundamental mistake in your assumptions or design.

Instead it will help you accelerate full-speed in the wrong direction.

@baldur I think this can be generalized to apply to our entire fossil fuel powered socio-technical system. We do not think about the best and sustainable ways of doing things, but just adopt, buy or build stuff that works superficially, without thinking about the long term or the big picture. ChatGPT is just a special case of this.

Basically the tech equivalent of the guy I see every week across the street with a gasoline-powered leaf-blower doing things like spending the better part of a minute chasing a single leaf into the gutter.
