I have had to work with colleagues who fix bugs this way, the famous "if this one thing happens, don't do the bad thing" clause. It basically just makes for less-maintainable code, often introduces new bugs and is a way of avoiding the difficult question "why is the system innately unprepared for this eventuality and even capable of producing this outcome?"
