@fox 92% of developers identify as male, according to a survey I've seen. So 20% non-male does require effort.
Non-white isn't always possible (i.e. in Poland).
@corbden Honestly, I've just been asking _why_ is that better than going straight to atheism? Is having some idea of God necessary at that point?
@corbden I've heard of many gods, usually characterized by their powers. Again, I don't think that's a useful archetype, but I've never had anything like that to deconstruct, so you may be right on it being helpful in those situations.
@corbden I wouldn't know, I've never found the idea of an omnipotent being setting the rules and doling out rewards and punishments to be comforting. Quite the opposite, I find the idea abhorrent on its face and deeply terrifying if you scratch the surface.
But if that brings you comfort, maybe there's others who will too.
@corbden That's why we invented tools like the scientific method. Your phone actually exists, we can find a lot of evidence for that. There is no evidence for there being a god of any kind.
@petrillic A similar thing had happened to autism, a sudden rise in diagnosis because people knew what to look for. Good for you for finding yourself early :)
If kids are "catching gender dysphoria" because of social media, it's because visibility matters. People see others, it is discussed, and they ... recognize some aspect of themselves in it.
That's it. One of the reasons I recognized I was queer early on was because... my mom had gay and lesbian friends and the visibility gave me a name for something.
THIS. IS. A. GOOD. THING.
@corbden Is that better than going a step further and admitting that it's just a made up concept?
Sustainability is a security issue. Consumers only have demands for a burnt out maintainer and the only help that arrives has long-term malicious intentions.
@Crell @webshinra @ramsey @asgrim I'm 20 years in on PHP too :) But also 9 years JavaScript/TS, 1 year Java and now learning Go, which I find very cool, not to mention all the languages I've learned as a hobby (I wrote Lua World of Warcraft plugins for example) and the ones I've already forgotten - looking at you, Delphi. Don't they me wrong, PHP has it's place. But we're very unlikely to start any new projects in it.
@ramsey @webshinra @Crell @asgrim Realistically one should learn more than one language.
@asgrim I think there was once a language called Ruby whose community had a history of doing that.
AI as it is built now will be dead in a decade, I think. It will be used to generate garbage for the web and it will learn from garbage on the web. Here you have your first "AI that can train itself", except any system with random changes and no good feedback loop it will just get worse and worse because random changes are rarely positive.
@healyn @breakfastgolem But if you'd married him, you could be Healyn Miserables which sounds pretty noble.
