I've been seeing several posts criticizing the idea of taking copious notes that never get integrated into published products.

Sometimes, I make notes to think. Sometimes, I take notes as "text doodles." Sometimes, I make notes to debate, to decide, to wonder, to imagine. Sometimes, I use notes to just get something out of my head. Sometimes, I'm just having fun.

None of these need to be published in order to be valuable.

Say it with me: "Publication is not the only goal of note-making."

One of the things I'm finding so interesting about large language models like GPT-3 and ChatGPT is that they're pretty much the world's most impressive party trick

All they do is predict the next word based on previous context. It turns out when you scale the model above a certain size it can give the false impression of "intelligence", but that's a total fraud

It's all smoke and mirrors! The intriguing challenge is finding useful tasks you can apply them to in spite of the many, many footguns

Woo hoo!

CONFIRMED! #Joplin internal links (joplin://x-callback-url/openNote?id=485939b69bc8460ca66c87035e45d0a9) can be pasted into #Logseq (and elsewhere probably) and clicking the link will open the specific page in Joplin!

This is perfect for me since I mainly use Joplin to store my notes and other miscellaneous information.

Having a way to cross-link pages across applications is a welcome surprise.

Granted, OLE (object linking & embedding) has existed in Windows since at least Windows 3.1. It’s just nice to see that it hasn’t gone out of style for self-hosted disparate apps………

The @Iconfactory has 16.1k “followers” on Twitter and currently about 4.1k here on Mastodon. Our last post received a whopping 9 likes and 3 retweets on Twitter and an amazing 287 favorites and 163 boosts here on Mastodon.

This has been said before by many people but Twitter isn’t worth your time any more. People don’t SEE what you’re saying there, even if they actually follow you. The service is in big, BIG trouble.

Also, thx for following @Iconfactory here, we appreciate all of you 💕🖖

I’ll probably run out of air before folks get this but, hey, one more time for those in the back:

If you’re creating “alternatives to #BigTech” that scale vertically, you’re doing it wrong. You’ll never beat Big Tech at vertical scale. They invented the game. They’ll destroy you at it every time. And say you somehow do manage it… congratulations, you’ve just become *checks notes* Big Tech. *golf claps*

So what do you do?

You limit vertical scale and #design for horizontal scale.

@johncarlosbaez IMO most of the problems in this list are political and not mathematical in nature. For example safeguards for AI: even if we get some mathematical solutions, I don't see them being used by the companies that make AI systems unless it is profitable to do so, or they are mandated by governments. Not to mention that legislating those mandates is a really difficult problem.

@ianbetteridge @ianbetteridge So long as they are genuine neo-Nazis that would do worse than punch to the people they hate, I agree with you. Not if they are simply, idk, anti-abortion protesters, or white people who don't like "positive" discrimination (for reasons of fairness, not white supremacy).

As for the poems, idk why but the second one seems to have less force than the first one. Probably just because I'm more used to the first one, though.

In the age of “AI” (algorithmic plagiarism), the maxim “less is more” has never been more relevant.

Any “AI” can bullshit for pages. Use your humanity to respect the limited time your fellow human beings have on this planet. Embrace brevity and simplicity in your work.

#PhysicsFactlet (Math edition)
A circle is the set of points equidistant from a center. But the meaning of "distance" depends on the metric used.
The p-norm on the plane (given by \( (|x|^p+|y|^p)^{1/p}\) can produce circles that look like squares, depending on the p you choose.
In particular:
* For p=2 one recovers the common Euclidean metric.
* For p=1 and p=\(\infty\) the circles looks like squares.
* for p<1 the p=norm doesn't satisfy the triangle inequality.

Read my lips:

An audio show that can only be played in an Apple player on an Apple device is not a podcast.

An audio show that can only be played in Spotify is not a podcast.

Repeat ad nauseam for any other proprietary audio show platforms.

A #podcast is an #RSS feed with enclosures of audio files which are playable across the whole ecosystem of podcast players.

Any reporter who reports on exclusive audio shows and calls them “podcasts” are doing a grave disservice to their audience.

I'd say it is quite useful to quickly get a birds eye view of a topic.
Do you trust anything written in there? Obviously not, but you can find a lot of useful keywords related to a topic you know nothing about and save yourself quite some time.

Seems to me that #Mastodon (& the other #Fediverse apps) represent a surprisingly sophisticated solution to a much more difficult technical & usability problem than what Twitter does... & it was developed in half the time & with several orders of magnitude less resource (both people & money). It's a remarkable feat no matter how you look at it.

The open source ecosystem won't begin to understand the impact of the #GoogleLayoffs for a little while yet, but we really need to pay attention. They wrote a lot of checks, and did a lot of work behind the scenes, and some of the people instrumental in that work are now gone.

Google's membership and foundations renewals next year will be revealing.

It's impossible to overstate how much our society is shaped by the fact that those who are given the most influence and the largest platforms will experience our status quo systems as working very nicely and have a vested interest in preserving those systems which benefit them.
