I'm in the Fediverse since 2019, but never did an #introduction so far:

I'm a #Linux #sysadmin, digital #forensics expert and #Debian developer. Programming in #Perl and #shell most time.

I insist on a #mechanicalkeyboard.

I like #Citroën #oldtimers (#2CV, #HY, #CX) and the #CityEL. I travel with #motorhome and #Brompton.

I'm going with #BikeToWork and like exotic #bicycle types: #foldingbike, #recumbent and #trike.

I am and always was a #nonsmoker. Have #asthma, though. I am #vaccinated.

So I was looking at the #smartplugs I have at home, and ended up down a spaghetti loop which ended up with #homeassistant feeding #grafana data which made a dashboard which shows the #energy consumption on each smart plug.

I know there are many different and probably better ways of doing this, I learned a few things though..

@xaseiresh Fun questions! I'm not a pro or anything myself, but a few lessons learned:

Trolling craigslist for deals is surprisingly productive. I was definitely not expecting to actually find decent and cheap server hardware there.

Get some simple energy monitoring, I just use a smart-plug. It's, uh... good to know 👀

Use as much virtualization/#docker as you can! It's totally bananas to me how easy, robust, and reproducible Docker stacks are. I use for pretty much all my services.

Also, be prepared. I love impractical equipment in my life. I lived for 3 years in a studio where a good chunk of my living space was taken up by my and soldering station workbench, and loved it. That still did not prepare me for how absurdly loud and hot a 1U rack server in your office is.

I'm not sure what the options are like but, having now purchased a 1U, I think I'd prefer a 2U so I could fit 80mm fans in it. Being limited to 40mm fans is pretty painful, it's difficult to find quiet alternatives that maintain the same airflow as the OEM fans. (Though... Stay tuned for some on my setup...)

And pay attention to drive bays -- I got a 1U with 3 bays, which I thought would be fine, but 3 bays is peanuts. That's an OS drive and the world's lamest RAID array. Though for me, it's a good excuse to DIY an external drive bay as another project :)

Not sure if any of that is helpful!

So… this is my #cat #introduction. You’ll be seeing a lot of her. :ablobcatheart:

She’s 16 1/2 years young - She’s half #MaineCoon so she’s always telling me stories and looking for snuggles. :blobCatComfy:

She’s a natural therapy cat and always finds me when I need her. #MentalHealth

Do you also have a pet that is your world? :ablobcatangel:

@adingbatponder @msprout @springlite Plus the mandatory ball of AC adapters in a surge protector dangling from something!

I feel like any enthusiast knows how much fun a good benchmarking sesh is!

In this blog post, I share some CPU from upgrading my quad-socket to 4x E7-4870s

@bryson @lapt0r big facts. I WFH and keep a chair next to my desk chair, my cat spends the whole day curled up next to me sleeping while I work. I’m always jealous of how comfy she looks

Full tech circle of self hosting

@casastorta It's totally wild to me how robust and relatively easy to set up services are nowadays.

The last time I played with hosting stuff was probably 10 odd years ago. Now, it takes me 10 minutes to spin up a new webservice on my Docker stack. It's absolutely mind blowing to me every time I do it.

@jocelyn_etienne

I think all you're missing to get the add user form working is deploying a fork of github.com/trutzig89182/AoM-ad btw

My advice if you're trying to start your own #mastodon isntance: USE CLOUD STORAGE! I'm specifically using #s3, but there are other options. If you end up federated with a lot of other servers you're going to be downloading a lot of media, and that will fill up your local storage quickly. S3 is pretty cheap, and a better form of #contentdelivery anyway. #advice #gettingstarted #twittermigration #selfhosted

@watzon Got it, thank you! One last question -- did it keep growing, or top out at around that 160?

This might be a fairly major wrinkle in my plans to self-host my own instance, but better to find out ahead of time

@watzon Yeesh! Ok, thanks. That's pretty painful. Is there a resource that describes where this data comes from / how it builds up in more detail?

@watzon Out of curiosity, what order of magnitude size of data are we talking here?
