This is not sustainable. "‘Not even enough money for food’: graduate students face cash crunch" nature.com/articles/d41586-022

@rajutomer it's kind of funny when there are tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars for research equipment, labs, supplies but when it comes to the pays of graduate students somehow there's no money

@gaymanifold @rajutomer @gaymanifold @rajutomer best part was the obama era change to overtime exempt status. anyone under $X per year. except graduate students, because fuck them I guess. somehow it's ok for them to do unpaid overtime but not for other professions :akko_sus:
@gaymanifold @rajutomer @ceo_of_monoeye_dating @gaymanifold @rajutomer that makes it worse, not better. working overtime when on paper you're half time makes even less sense. nominally half time but the reality doesn't match at all
@roboneko @gaymanifold @rajutomer You're absolutely right. I did not speak to make it sound better - I spoke to explain the justification for it.
@gaymanifold @rajutomer >Miserable 6-8 year experience of doing nothing but work.
>50% chance of failure independent of your skill in your field.
>Starvation-level salary
>Hyper-toxic environment
>Minimal benefit over the M.S. outside of academia or national labs

This is why I routinely tell people to not pursue a Ph.D. unless they have an employer sponsoring it.
