It's not that stuff compulsory has to be made out of plastic, you have a bunch of other materials you could use, and all of them work terribly for modern applications.

Finding an alternative to plastics is quite a complex challenge, it will be easier for now to find a way to produce plastics without petroleum.
This is rather important, since we strongly rely on plastics and we need them also when petroleum finishes.
Moreover, we will need petroleum for other things which might be considered more important, such as medicines.
