PSA: When leftists start talking about 'performativity', it's just a confusing term for 'tradition'.

'Performativity' describes social practices which, by being repeatedly performed in social context, uphold themselves and form our social identities.

This is literally what is normally called 'tradition'. Nothing more.

(Note: This is different than performative speech, which describes sentences like 'I hereby […]' — utterances which are designated as actions by convention.)

So when they say: 'performative nature of X', it's just saying that X is a tradition.

And when they say: 'performativity of X', it can be translated to: 'traditions relating to X'.

That's it. It's just fancy wording. It's role is to be more confusing than it needs to be.
