I think the most interesting part of my research into french trains in the early 90s has been the random references you find about the state of tech back then.

TIL you could buy train tickets "online" in France in 1990. Using a Minitel (France's alternative internet) with its LECAM addon, which features a smartcard reader. Online payment actually involved a challenge/response with the credit card's chip! And now in 2023 we just type card numbers/expiration/CVC into random websites...

Weird that you guys don’t have a solution for that, over in Europe we’ve got 3DS for doing a vendor independent challenge response check for online transactions.

@Ash not sure who "you guys" is supposed to be given that I'm from the EU and have lived in Europe my whole life...

3DS is still fairly rare, even post PSD2. I'd say less than 50% of my online transactions end up hitting 3DS, and most of these 50% pass 3DS checks without ever involving a 2nd factor (I assume the bank does fraud/abuse checks and decides "it's fine, no need to prompt").

It's sometimes even more bizarre in the left-hand-doesn't-know-what-right-does way: My bank once got me to confirm a transaction via their app and then denied it due to suspicion of fraud.
