@grrrr_shark I guess one of the huge advantages we had is having seen computer at a stage where they were simple enough to understand how everything worked. Then we saw incremental improvements, and more incremental improvements. And more and more. And every step was small enough that you could wrap your head around it.

Starting from scratch now, with the amount of complexity we've layered, is going to be a nightmare.

You still have such computers today: e.g. microcontrollers. Ones with external memory buses are rarer than they used to be though, so the next steps are larger.
