How do digital circuits parse analog signals, and how do they turn streams of ones and zeroes back into analog waveforms?

Particularly for consumer audio applications, the answer might surprise you: instead of a couple of intuitive and elegant solutions, the modern approach often involves wacky 1-bit pulse trains and a pretty unusual analog feedback loop. More here:

How do delta-sigma converters degrade for signals with high frequency components? It's not obvious to me whether they could provide bitstreams that would correspond to lower frequency signals with a higher amplitude (i.e. whether they could exaggerate amplitude).
