Weird thing: with the expected caveats, if you took the 3 largest companies by market cap (Nvidia, Microsoft, Apple), they have a higher value than the Dutch East India Company at its peak. That's a company with a legally enforced monopoly and something like sovereign territory. If any of those three companies gets 3-4x bigger, it'll be the largest market cap in history.
