Every single damn time you say you’re old and happy without kids on the internet:

“Who will visit you in the nursing home”

“YOUR BLOODLINE WILL DIE”

So you’re basically saying I should have had kids because I’m Count Dracula and need to maintain my army of dependent slave progeny to cater to my whims? Seems healthy.

@hacks4pancakes I mean, if my nephew's in town I bet he'd visit me in the nursing home, but this isn't really something we can plan because the next generation is free to do whatever they want! Seems like a good idea to make social connections with younger people, but they don't have to be parental connections and if they are, seems kinda like putting all our eggs in one or a couple baskets? Cuz I'm sure as hell not gonna have MANY kids even if I have any

I wonder whether the ability to have non-familial connections is getting better or worse in different areas. E.g. when I was a kid, we had "the Grandma" as a neighbour. She was actually a grandma (I was friends with her two grandchildren), but she was also a grandma to ~every child living in the vicinity. I also remember a semi-retired gardener, who ran a tiny gardening store two streets away, whom I'd randomly visit every so often on the way home from school. I now live in a different country, so can't really see changes of that _over time_.

@robryk @raphaelmorgan @hacks4pancakes That's what I aspire to be. My kid has told us he is absolutely not having kids, so I already know I'm getting grand-pigeons instead, and that's fine with me. Tons of kids around here I can teach feminism and hand-sewing.
