Why are car theft alarms a thing?
I have heard them go off dozens of times in my life. Not once have I thought "oh wow I guess there's a car being stolen right now". But I _have_ thought "I wish I could strangle whoever came up with that dumb idea" nearly every single time

I once saw a DIY car alarm that had no horn. Instead, if it triggered, it would display a "stolen. call police." message somewhere around the rear windscreen _only while the car was driving_.
@robryk @rygorous If you can avoid false positives, that sounds like a better idea than a horn.
