I do not object to "federation" of #Mastodon to other social platforms, so long as the connections are TWO-WAY and aren't just (in theory or practice) mainly a mechanism to firehose posts from giant platforms without giving replies from Mastodon equal footing with native replies on those platforms.
This must also include the ability for users on those other platforms to subscribe/follow users on Mastodon (and for Mastodon users to follow users on those platforms), and provide equivalent mechanisms for abuse control including blocking, etc.
Otherwise, it's a trap.

Mastodon is neither the center of the world nor of the fediverse.
@hackbyte You can use the terminology you want, and I'll use the terminology I want. My view is that people insisting on saying Fediverse instead of Mastodon have mainly helped to confuse the entire world and suppressed uptake of users who otherwise might have gotten involved. It's like bitching about the word "hacker" now being used mainly in the press for bad actors. Too late for that argument, and too late to try get public perception of anything other than Mastodon as the term of recognition. You of course are free to use whatever words you want for whatever you want, but don't try tell me how to choose my words.
@FLGLchicago @hackbyte Agreed, though keep in mind that the Gods of Mastodon didn't seem very interested in letting "the wrong kind of people" in at all. Quite painful to watch the arguments about keeping hoops in the onboarding process to try filter out nontechies. Awful. In any case, sticking to using one poor term rather than multiple poor terms seems the best approach at this point, because a new good term isn't coming around.

What properties would a good term have?
Well, since Fediverse has essentially become a "brand" term, you may have a problem.
Fediverse as an umbrella appellation would be fine if people would stop arguing the definition and mechanics to death.
Not to suggest what might be better for individual services, but Mastodon does not describe its service or any attribute of its service, and as an extinct proboscidean is rather ugly and offputting, which may, as some suggest, entirely be the point. Certainly not inviting.
