Mannn “this is open source therefore it's good" really needs to die as a thought process. Moderation and community-building is a multi-person system, not a thing we can do as individuals. It's not a matter of "stand up infrastructure, maintain it hands off the content, good things will happen”
I may or may not be talking about the literal nazis who just contacted me on Matrix but hooo boy. Two users with no way to get any info about them before accepting the chat just contacted me. It went about as well as you'd expect from this post.

Do you think that the phone network shares these problems, or maybe they're ameliorated somehow there?
@robryk I mean I’m getting spam smses gathering ostensible donations for fascists so that’s not great but phone numbers are at least a little traceable to real identities by authorities and that mitigates some.
But also phone numbers don’t have built in profiles and history.
