For the last 3 nights I've been going to sleep at a sensible time but always waking up after just 3-5 hours feeling wide awake. Trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Maybe I'll try melatonin tonight? I have literally never experienced melatonin to do anything at all.

You might wish to look up time delays involved in using melatonin first: I don't remember what they are but I do remember that they sounded unintuitive to me.
