The politicians who visited the FL immigrant concentration camp and then made a big deal about the design of the integrated sink/toilets have apparently never been to a jail or prison where these are common. Standard piece of equipment available from many suppliers, designed to prevent vandalism and self harm. Is it gross to have your sink over your toilet? Yes it is. But this isn't a new thing.

The problem is that we have concentration camps, we are providing no due process of law, we have a private prison industry capable of building a concentration camp in the middle of nowhere in a week, and the likelihood that many politicians are invested in these companies and benefit from their lobbying and donations. I guess if it takes the design of a toilet to get people upset then by all means roll out that talking point but it's really just surface detail.

(Potentially OT) Huh, I thought the point of those is saving water and encouraging people to wash hands after using the toilet. How do these prevent vandalism (of the sink or of the toilet?) and/or self-harm?

@robryk I would guess it is the single non-ceramic unit makes it harder to break and get pieces off of, there's no exposed plumbing, etc. And that is how they are marketed to jails so I guess you'd have to ask a manufacturer about that selling point.

@Nonya_Bidniss

Ah, I might have seen some other variants of the same concept (I saw them in toilets in Japan with no rhyme or reason that I could discern as to which ones would have them and which would have a separate sink).

@robryk When I lived in Germany one apartment I lived in had a one-piece molded PCV bathroom, the whole thing -- sink, toilet, and shower -- was one big piece of molded plastic. To clean the bathroom I could just spray the flexible shower all over the place.
