Ongoing discussion at school about a complete ban on mobile phones. I can sympathise, they do cause issues, from minor irritation to serious psychological issues and potentially criminal use.
BUT...they're such useful tools in the science department, particularly for senior students. Light sources, colorimeters, accelerometers, still/video/slo-mo camera, sound sensors and analytics, light sensors, spirit levels, sig-gens...I'm tempted to fill a bench with the kit they replace, and a price list.

Your thoughts? Particularly if you're a parent/student/teacher at high school just now or recently?

@_thegeoff Would it be possible to have phones owned by the department/school that did all those things you'd otherwise have separate devices for, instead of using the students' own phones?

Might also be easier on those students who don't have/families can't afford those phones and then they don't feel left behind.

@hl One option, yup. But even a cheap £250 phone is a significant chunk of our annual budget. That said, could be something we could claim through IT rather than the science budget (there seems to be plenty of £1,000 iPhone budget for certain roles for example)....yeah, interesting idea, thanks. 👍

If you go this route, you might wish to know that the set of phones that have a barometer is somewhat weird (it's neither the more fancy ones nor the less fancy ones that are significantly more likely to have one ttbomk).
