Holiday Cocktails
Ideally, people follow me for science content...but I'm terrible at actually doing that.
ALCOHOL, HOWEVER.
'Tis the season where I take a break from my usual of spamming whiskey Old Fashioneds and buy Fancy Liqueurs and mix stuff.
I approached The Cabinet this evening with a theory and it's actually pretty good! If you are of similar inclination, I suggest:
8-12oz glass
1 sugar cube
~3 dashes orange bitters
~2 dashes ginger bitters
~4 cm^2 orange peel
*MUDDLE*
2 parts Grand Marnier
1 part Amaretto
1 part Bailey's
*ice to desired dilution*
Stir you cocktail and post to Mastodon!
Happy Holidays to all y'all! I also recommend you focus on a few mental health days so we can attack January like it deserves.
@urbangeology Yey! You're here!!
Let me greet you with this glorious polished #serpentinite cladding a wall in Nottingham. 🙂
You can lose yourself looking at what you could swear is 3d detail (Reader, it isn't!)
(For folk who are interested, serpentinites are rocks that form from changes to certain existing igneous rocks. Hydrothermal fluids that percolate through them can deposit minerals that solidify in in a snakeskin-like pattern - hence the name.)
“Little by little, over more than two centuries, the local stories told by rocks in all parts of the world have been stitched together into a great global tapestry - the geologic timescale. This "map" of Deep Time represents one of the great intellectual achievements of humanity, arduously constructed by stratigraphers, paleontologists, geochemists, and geochronologists from many cultures and faiths. It is still a work in progress to which details are constantly being added and finer and finer calibrations being made.”

My "rocknuts" screen name shenanigans
OK PEOPLE...the below screenshot seems to present an opportune moment in time to explain that my screen name "rocknuts" is from my college friends realizing 25 years ago that I...
1. Like rocks. Like I really really like rocks. I went on and did a whole dissertation on rocks. People were all impressed at the end and stuff...=ROCK
2. My friends also recognized that I am insane. To this day my shrink continues to be confused about my psychosis, but she would be the first to assure you I am not dangerous. None of my problems are offensive...=NUTS
So I'm just rock+nuts and that name stuck really fast. It was far too accurate for me to disavow. I mean...that nickname gets big approval from objective scientists familiar with the topic.
All of that said, the good people at Pokémon have recently decided my screen name is a problem for them. I've been using it for 10+ years with Pokémon. SO...let's hear it for the new intern at Nintendo who felt the need to flag my shit as offensive...👏👏👏👍
Thanks kid! Always good to know QA is ever vigilant...

What if the universe is set up just like the Fediverse, but we don’t know about the existence of any other life because our Earth instance was preemptively blocked for hateful conduct.
With the Twitter reinstatement of the former US President who attempted to incite a fascist coup after losing an election, now would _really_ be a good time to stop cross-posting your Twitter RTs here.
If you feel that cross-posting is the only way to maintain a presence here, please consider limiting it to original posts without mentions or RTs, to avoid cluttering timelines with Twitter URLs. Thank you kindly for your consideration.
Birdsite & Mastodon
Twitter is a dopamine slot machine without the wager — open account, log in, start scrolling, get your fix while the algorithm discovers your addiction triggers and leverages your outrage threshold to maximize infinite scroll time.
Here, without a certain amount of curiosity & interest in discovery, the UX might be a shrug. But if you’re curious about and interested in the world, this place is a GOLDMINE of potential for connection.

The last few days before the asteroid crashed into Earth were filled with resignation, reminiscence, and confessions. All over social media:
"I have a crush on you."
"I actually like banana on pizza."
"I didn't lose the ring, I sold it."
"I faked the asteroid."
"I kiss... What?"
