I didn't take this photo but I was with my husband when he did. It was breathtaking up on Stenbury Down on the Isle of Wight, watching the mist roll in at sunset. The sheep were surprised to see us and for once the weather did what we'd hoped it would do! #SheepofMastodon

If you are interested in , , or the development of cool new scientific instruments, then this episode may be a good fit for you!

Dr. Chris Chouinard is doing some interesting work on ion mobility-mass spectrometry for a wide range of applications from to . He is also using predictive computational approaches to be able to detect structures of compounds that don't even exist yet!

I'm the leader of the #metamorphic #petrology group teamgar.net/. Using X-rays, electron- and ion-beams, and lasers, we study the chemical and isotopic properties of #crystals and their 3D distributions in #geological #materials. This helps us to better understand #nucleation, #growth and #diffusion. We collect our samples in the field and develop numerical models that simulate geological processes. The software teamgar.net/theria_g is a product of that research.

Sometimes, I think I have had enough personal embarrassment for one lifetime, but then, I'm all like, "No."
[rises from chair]
NO.

So geo-types had a number of weekly hashtags going over the years on the bird site:

#MineralMonday
#VolcanoMonday
#TectonicTuesday
#WaterfallWednesday
#ThinSectionThursday
#FridayFold
#FlumeFriday
#FossilFriday

@annejefferson and I also had #ScenicSaturday on the blog for a while.

Do we have an appetite for any of these here? Which ones have I forgotten?

US elections, voter suppression, demographics

This is why I, and so many other Black voters, are so often right about who is going to win a US election, and your favorite statistician, or election pundit, is so often wrong.

Your polls don't matter. Campaign promises don't matter. It's all about turnout. And turnout is all about voter suppression. And voter suppression is all about racism.

Without understanding US racism, your election predictions will always be woefully wrong.

This photo is from one of my favourite field trips. Here, I collected carbonate samples from Limbla Syncline (Nothern Territory, Australia) to reconstruct Cryogenian seawater chemistry for my undergraduate research. I miss working in the NT! #science #geoscience #geology #fieldwork #Australia @phdstudents @phdlife @academicchatter

Not everyone has the opportunity as an undergrad to do the kind of research that results in published papers. Because of e.g. the university they attend, they don't know they can (e.g. first-gen), or there aren't paid RA opportunities and they can't afford to work for free. So if "already published" is a hard-stop admissions criteria I'd be curious about the diversity of the PhD student population.

My #introduction: Hi everyone, my name is Jack, and I am a #geoscience #PhD student at The University of Queensland, #Australia. In my PhD research, I seek to explain why "weird" #volcanoes exist in East Asia and Indonesia. To do so, I (1) analyse the composition of rocks erupted at these volcanoes to determine how they formed and (2) use earthquakes to model the structure of the upper 660 km of Earth. I am passionate about all aspects of #science and am excited to learn from everyone else here!

Since there was interest, I have set up a Google Form/Sheet for Earth Scientists on Mastodon.

Interested in #geology and #EarthScience and want people to find you? Add your name.

However, please do not add anyone who is not you without explicit permission - some people might prefer to be discovered more organically, or not at all.

"Mastodon sucks because any one of the 5000+ communities can set their own rules and might accidentally deprive people in that community of my witty hot takes for a reason I personally believe to be flippant" isn't the sick burn that the Twitter user with 50k followers thinks it is.

Okay, here's my post! I'm not publicly on social media (eg I don't use my full name, I don't post pics of me or my family), but hopefully broad strokes can give some idea of who I am and what I'll be posting/sharing/re-tooting (if that's the right word?)...

- I'm a with a PharmD. I'm lucky enough to . I spend most of my days researching and writing up summaries of newly approved drugs - including new indications, new dosage forms, etc.

- Haven't had many of my follows from the Birdplace move over here (yet?), but I love my Milwaukee Bucks ( ), Brewers, Green Bay Packers, and Wisconsin Badgers.

- I'll try to keep most of my political commentary behind a Content Warning (which I think is the standard on Mastodon), but I don't think I can add a CW for re-toots. (if there is, teach me things!) I support WisDems, Voces de la Frontera, 4 Directions, and President Biden. I write , as time allows. And I vote in Every. Election. I. Can. (Wisconsin has a pivotal judicial election coming in April. Have you heard?)

- I'm a cishet married mom to 2 amazing kids. (3 and almost 1) I won't be posting photos, but stories may be a thing. Kids really do say and do the darndest things.

- I like to cook and bake and try new things. Photos (and recipes) might be shared upon occasion.

And there's plenty more, probably, but this feels like a good start at least.

@Mousebumples pharma is fun! I do control in biopharma. We mostly make phase 1/2 antibody drug conjugates that hunt down cancer cells.
My wife is from MKE and so I married into that Badgers Brewers Bucks Packers life. Not upset about it.

@Mousebumples Welcome! Wisconsin is lovely...my wife got this fridge magnet in the Dells...
