“Being somewhat of an old-school programmer who started by writing BASIC on a C64 in the 80s, modern web software seems like a towering garbage heap of ill-conceived abstractions, layered on top of another until no one even remembers code needs to run on actual hardware.” @jk gmi.skyjake.fi/gemlog/2020-11_

@tilderadio Being a radio, you might be in touch with people who can help me out :)

Today I got some bad news. The disease which has already taken my right-side hearing is progressing much faster than expected. Our expectation was for a similar hearing loss on the left side in a 10-15 year time frame. We now expect the left-side hearing to be gone in at most 12 months.

I'm still in shock. So is my family.
We've taken a few days off to process this.

I'm making a playlist with all the music I must hear in the next months.

Please add your suggestions here (annuel2.framapad.org/p/musical) and share this around.

I used to respect The Intercept and their journalism, but the circumstances of Greenwald’s exit, the recent obvious sponsored fake news they published in Brazil and their reaction when caught just eroded all my trust.

I have to praise the quality of customer support by @ungleich

Definitely recommended! These people know what they are doing :)

Chilling out after work with the latest 8-Bit Show And Tell episode, on 6502 assembly :commodore:

Robin's calm exposition and one-handed typing are so... soothing. The nerd equivalent of a knitting show 😌

The fediverse’s first public Managed Group Server is live!

  • Sign up while all the good names are available *

You can go to groups.qoto.org and register for a group. But be sure to read the about/more page first to understand how it works! groups.qoto.org/about/more

Anyway, as far as I know this is the first time the fediverse has had an open, managed group server.

QOTO also has the group directory. Attached is what the group directory, and a group timeline looks like on QOTO, but we did some streamlining, your client may render groups differently and most wont have the directory, which is a federated list of active groups.

Anyway, anyone who wants a group, go sign up for one! Its open now!

The Fall of Silicon Valley

I disagree with some of the details presented (mostly about idealizing past inventors), but this is a very good read:

The federal government is expected to announce measures against the second Corona wave here. My bet is on "too little too late".

When deciding whether to allow travelers and tourists from a given country, I don’t think officials should trust Covid numbers from dictatorships.
For example, I have no trust in infection counts from China and yet many countries don’t include it in their risk areas lists.

Use a mask, use Tor.

Today we’re launching our year-end campaign centered on the ways we can care for ourselves and our community: by masking up and using Tor. Anonymity loves company, after all.

Help resist the surveillance pandemic. #UseAMaskUseTor

I'm thinking about hosting an instance of MediaGoblin to keep my photos organized. Any good or bad experiences? Suggestions? Alternatives?

@kensanata Just read your post on Swiss Exceptionalism. +1

Being a migrant in CH it's interesting to see the confusion in some acquaintance's faces when the pedestal they were standing on when criticizing my country of origin is now shown to be false preconceptions.
