I'm honestly confused by all the people flat out whining about it being too difficult to figure out Mastodon. Just play around with it! Over on Twitter I was talking about it, and one guy said it seemed too confusing... and another said "it just takes 15 minutes to figure it out" and the first guy is now ranting that that's 14.5 minutes too long... Dude, get a grip.

Egyptian authorities’ abusive measures for the global climate summit #COP27 include:
⚠️ dozens of arrests of people calling for protests
⚠️ more police checkpoints, where people are forced to give up their phones for checks into their social media content
⚠️ cameras in all taxis, allowing security agency surveillance of drivers and passengers

@mattblaze The three biggest impacts of server choice are:
1. The stability/reliability of the server (depends on where it's hosted, who's hosting it, how well resourced, how funded, etc).
2. The local moderation rules -- what actions could get you banned, etc, what other servers might be blocked, and so on.
3. The content of your Local Timeline (everyone else on your server) and Federated Timline (everyone followed by someone on your server) -- affecting discovery.
2/ Such taboos might include:
- Only ever wear the same woolen undershirt for the rest of your life.
- Only shave on Saturdays
- Only ever wear one stocking
- Never enter churches or never spend more than half an hour inside
(The last one might be rather tricky for priests who want to stay in their profession, I presume...)
1/ "Schools of #Magic " show up from time to time in German #folklore . One of these is the "Black School", which is known in Northern Frisia and Denmark.
In it, priests are instructed in the magical arts by the Devil. Most priests know a little about magic, but full graduates must sign their souls over to him. However, they are saved if they adhere to certain taboos for the rest of their lives.

I wonder if joining #mastodon would be easier for new people if we called the servers “community hubs” instead of “instances”. 🤔 people get confused (and intimidated!) by the technical language; and really, federation boils down to being community hubs anyway.
