The first thing I drove was a tractor while the men and older boys loaded hay. That made me use the clutch to start and stop but no shifting per se.

First on-road vehicle I drove was a '66 VW bus. No such thing as automatic transmission on those.
First automatic I ever owned wasn't until the early '90's.
