In #rpg, there is this huge overlap between story games and parts of the OSR in that there's no need to fudge. Players are aware of how the game works and how it's set up. Dice rolls are rolled openly and with stakes clear.

That can sometimes trip me up when I'm talking to people outside of those two communities and I run into someone who says on whatever forum (BGG, Reddit, EN World) that they're fudging and that they're players would leave if they found out.

Same person would never dream to cheat in Magic or in a boardgame.

To me, that… kinda explains the appeal of Magic and boardgames and MMOs. Especially in the 90s when there weren't as many story games or OSR games.

@Sandra Cortex (Prime) has a neat mechanic where you roll your pool and pick 2 dice for your total.

Often it is the two highest, but the GM can purposely pick a different two. A kind of fudging while actually following the rules.
