Minus security and privacy concerns, can anyone enlighten me why the hell smart ovens exist...? Who needs connectivity in an oven? I don’t get it.
@ashwrites the main reason for sensors in home appliance should be fault prevention, with Internet connectivity inference except for remote diagnostics when needed. Unfortunately, most “preventive maintenance” Is schedule based not sensor based, and connectivity of any type isn’t needed. #IoT #SmartAppliance #SmartHome #SensorAnalyticsEcosystems #SensAE
@jadp thanks for that. I really am trying to take the privacy/security hat off for this and sensors for fault prevention does make sense.
@jadp @ashwrites don't fall into the trap of thinking local networks are safe (eggshell networks). A firewall is probably stronger security than your wifi password. Best to always use well-established security, e.g. Matter. (And consumer devices have different use cases than commercial, e.g. they must allow local physical override for ownership transfer.)
@sgryphon @ashwrites absolutely; Bluetooth and Thread/Matter or even Zigbee and Z-wave are better choices. The idea of using the “Guest network” of your home router isn’t great. Yes, consumer and industrial have different use cases and different security understanding. The great IT/OT debate comes to mind too
