@billyjoebowers @LikeItOrLumpIt Yeah, it's all cool. I was just citing the only valid argument I have for seeing a movie that's not your thing.
@4d3fect @AmishSuperModel I was going to say... she's not far off the mark.
@yurnidiot Reminds me of "elastic water". We made it in lab in junior high, also in 1966.
@polotek Correlation does not mean causation, except when it does.
@LikeItOrLumpIt Yes, I've known a number of people who hadn't seen Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, etc. My only argument to them for going to see them anyway, even if it's not your thing, is that extremely popular films / books result in widely adopted cultural memes. If you haven't seen the movie and someone says, "He's from the Darth Vader school of management," or "He's our Mr. Spock around here," you lack a solid feel for what they mean.
Happy birthday to Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179), here surrounded by plants & a mineral she touted as medical treatments, her invented alphabet & model of the universe. One of my most popular prints this year!
Her writings preserve not only her own knowledge & theories but the nature of institutional #medicine & folk healing of her day (which she deftly combined). While she might be best remembered today as a composer …

This is a very interesting article on the current state of AI and the near future:

Privilege is when you can get away with things that others would get in trouble for doing.
I know #DeportElonMusk is trending, but a more reasonable and even-handed sanction would be revoking the #oligarch's security clearance. As a naturalized citizen, I don't want a potential fascist government to be able to deport me based on my social media posts. Security clearance OTOH is not a right, and it can be revoked based on Leon Smuk's conduct.
Rich Lowry catches himself using the n-word to refer to the Haitians in Springfield. The clip is followed by Lowry saying the same phrase slowed down.

@ai6yr Hah. Yeah. Well, now you know how to conduct yourself should you find yourself in a third-world country or a state like West Virginia. It's not a problem if you're smart and are white.
@ai6yr Good to hear. I'm in West Virginia, where such rules may appear in another 100 years. Haha.
There are no rules here. Health Department, Fire Department, fire codes, electrical codes, are all unheard of here. Do whatever you want.
And why is it different from California? Because nobody sues anyone here, ever. Lawsuits is what keeps businesses in Los Angeles in line. But here, there are no lawsuits.
The main reason for that is this state is run by a hierarchy of families, much like a third-world country. With one phone call from the right person, a lawsuit is dismissed. Also criminal charges -- a phone call and it's all gone. Caught with 25,000 doses of ecstasy? If you're the mayor's son, poof, all gone, never happened.
This is the difference between California and West Virginia. Like night and day.
Having lived in third-world countries, I figured this out quick when I moved here to WV and became close with a local family with clout.
@ai6yr Tell me about it. Working the broiler during the 95+ temps we had this summer finally got to me. Almost passed out a few times and got into heatstroke.
And it's only going to get worse. I can't wait for winter to come.
@HopelessDemigod It's not healthy to eat a big meal and then go to bed, especially if you're weight conscious.
@ai6yr Yeah, but it's hopeless. As long as the food keeps coming and they have their six pack for football, it's all good. They don't care.
Maybe I'll live long enough to see them experience a lack of food. Not that I wish ill on anyone, and knowing that it would affect me as well, but if it happened I won't have much sympathy.
Live and learn -- or don't.
@ai6yr I'm so sorry. I hope he lived to a good age.
As a native Californian, now living in West Virginia, and in the restaurant business, it bothers me that people don't appreciate those who put food on the table, every day. If it wasn't for farm workers these people would be eating insects with a side of tree bark.
I salute your friend.
@maryeffrancis @davidaugust In the interest of context, I should add that I was 6 to 8 years old at this time, but I remember it photographically. At that age I didn't think much of it. That's just how it is. Only years later did I realize I had inadvertently dodged a horrific bullet. Polio is no joke. It will fuck you up good.
@maryeffrancis @davidaugust Yup, lived it, including the sugar cube and classmates in leg braces and crutches.
