This is just a reminder that trains in the Netherlands have run on wind power since 2017.

If we want to, we really can have nice things:

If you're shocked TX Gov Abbot is planning to pardon Daniel Perry for murdering a man at a peaceful BLM march—just remember—TX is the state that sentenced a Black woman to 5 years for an uncounted ballot, but not a white male judge for deliberate voter fraud—in the same County. TX sentenced a Black kid to 10 years for punching & killing 1 person, but not an affluent white teen for getting drunk & killing 4—they had the same judge

Texas GOP has proudly chosen fascism over democracy. Believe them

#USPol The moral of the fascist discord leaker is that fascism, racism, antisemitism, and misogyny are security risks. People who are dedicated to those things will harm your organization in pursuit of their fucked-up ideology, and you should not wait for them to do so before you show them the door.

imagine if every local NPR station ran its own mastodon instance & devoted it to foregrounding precisely the local issues that local NPR stations tend to be so good at covering in a way that almost no other outlet does

Incredible #flood situation going on tonight in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A thunderstorm parked over the city dropping over 300 mm of rain over the course of a few hours.

In the 12 hours ending 23:00 EDT, Fort Lauderdale airport recorded 649 mm of rain.

The April average is 77 mm and the annual average is 1548 mm.

Holy shit. The convicted murderer who Greg Abbott (R) said he is moving to pardon for shooting a Black Lives Matter protestor just had his private texts released— they show him calling Black people “monkeys,” “animals,” and saying he wants to hunt them. houstonchronicle.com/politics/

The U.S. must root extremists out of the military. Through congressional testimony and other ways, we've given suggestions to the government. There's no time to waste in implementing those suggestions. globalextremism.org/post/leake

Clarence Thomas not only accepted free vacations and had undisclosed financial dealings with a GOP donor, he also supported the Citizens United ruling and insisted that SCOTUS should, “invalidate mandatory disclosure and reporting requirements.”

His actions drip with corruption.

On CNN this evening, Trump's AG Bill Barr suggested that "keywords" should be scanned on social media to detect stolen intelligence materials, presumably including private groups, since the group where the current materials apparently originated was a private Discord group.

This would be a massive invasion of privacy, and also vastly ineffective for a range of fairly obvious reasons.

I was on a podcast where kids asked two people questions to decide who was the fake and who was the real expert.

The host said that early on, the kids chose the fake every time because the actors answered every question confidently and the experts would hedge or even sometimes say, "I don't know."

They eventually told the fakes to be less confident so the kids would pick the expert sometimes.

It just occurred to me this is now real life with #chatGPT (but nobody is telling it to back off).

I need your help…

NPR is leaving Twitter but they are planning to focus on Instagram

We need to tell them to join the Fediverse

Many of their journalists’ accounts, as well as their main account, haven’t been active on mastodon. Tell them how much we need them here. (In fact, they should have their own instance)

Use the link, tell NPR we are waiting for them here and spread the word far and wide:

A #JuniorDoctor speaks:

'We need the government to recognise the crisis that’s happening in our healthcare system; recognise that junior doctors are instrumental to fixing that crisis; and pay us what we’re worth'!

Airline ticketing fees. Concert fees. Bank overdraft fees. Fees for everything.

Corporations call them “convenience fees” or “service fees.” Probably because they “conveniently” “serve” to pad their bottom lines, costing Americans at least $29 billion/yr.

It’s all a huge scam.

I have in my entire career so far treated zero complications of mifepristone, and maybe a half dozen from medical or surgical abortion overall. I have treated thousands of acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) overdoses, scores of diphenhydramine (Benadryl) overdoses, and dozens of baclofen (Lioresal) and alprazolam (Xanax) overdoses. I’ve watched people die from aspirin overdoses and aspirin-related bleeds. This judge in Texas is a disingenuous lying scumbag.
