1836: A teenage girl with blue-grey eyes and an oceanic mind is bent over an astronomy book, preparing to revolutionize our understanding of the planet.

No university anywhere in the world would admit her.
No scientific society would grant her membership.

Still, Eunice Newton Foote would go on to become the first scientist to link atmospheric carbon dioxide levels to rising planetary temperature themarginalian.org/2023/09/12/

Hunter in the grass.

This tiny Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher (Polioptila caerulea) was right outside the backdoor hunting in the grass. I had to take this shot through the storm door (in America, a storm door is an outer door made of glass).

"Blue-gray Gnatcatchers eat small insects, spiders, and other invertebrates. Prey species vary across their extensive range. In the Southwest, for example, prey include treehoppers, froghoppers, leaf hoppers, plant bugs, tree bugs, leaf beetles, weevils, wolf spiders, caterpillars, and grasshoppers. In the Northeast, adult and larval moths can provide up to half of prey taken. The smallest prey are swallowed alive. The wings are torn off larger prey and their bodies beaten on a perch prior to being eaten. Parents generally feed the young these same foods, offering progressively larger whole prey as the chicks mature." - allaboutbirds.org

"I'm rich enough, why should my kids get free school meals?"

1) Universal provision means for the price of giving food to a kid who "doesn't need it", kids who need it definitely gets it. No barriers. No forms. No questions or tests.

2) Your kids won't bully the "free meal kids".

3) You have an interest in ensuring that your kids are not just fed but fed well. This means you won't put up with the "poor kid gruel" that you might campaign for to "save money" if you're not using the service.

Deliberate murders of #Ukraine children by russian soldiers reveal culture of impunity

The story is based on the documentary “Bullet Holes,”

Intro
On a cold March morning, the Mahdyk family bundled themselves into their minivan. Their village near Kyiv was occupied, and they couldn’t bear staying there any longer.

The family – mother Olha, father Valerii, and their two children, 16-year-old Anna and 12-year-old Vladyslav – decided to try to escape

🙄 (Or... you can buy a traditional tag with your pet's name and address and your phone number on it, which DOES NOT REQUIRE someone to scan a QR code and doesn't advertise a company). Or, you could make your OWN QR code tag (which is dumb, as it puts technology in between yoiu and getting your pet back) #technology #excess

@ai6yr This is a perfect example of how tech is actually making our lives more complex and much worse. How is this offering (which I'm sure you have to pay for and have technology to use) any better than just printing a phone number on the tag!?

Had this Supercharger site been full several of us might have been tempted to attach a tow strap to this guy's tow hooks and shown him that a Tesla has enough torque and adhesion to drag a super-size Ram pickupm even with the brakes set, front hubs locked, and in gear or park.

Or perhaps this is the new Tesla model "A" - for A-hole?

“I am alarmed by recent reports of social media platforms, like Meta’s, amplifying Russian disinformation that have already resulted in the undermining of local mayoral elections in Slovakia. The same forces are mobilizing to undermine Slovakia’s September 30 general elections on a massive scale with much larger consequences.” - Sen. Menendez in letter to Zuckerberg foreign.senate.gov/imo/media/d

Senator Elizabeth Warren is demanding an investigation into SpaceX after Elon Musk acknowledged he had blocked Ukraine from extending the private Starlink satellite network for an attack on Russian warships near the Crimean coast

“The Congress needs to investigate what’s happened here and whether we have adequate tools to make sure foreign policy is conducted by the government and not by one billionaire,” the Massachusetts Democrat said Monday at the Capitol.

When I was a kid in the 80s and 90s, I watched Star Trek: The Next Generation. I soaked up the vibes of a high-tech, utopian future. I internalized the trajectory we were on was good, that we had reached the End of History. There might be a few bumps on the road, but the direction was inevitable and the destination was inexorable.

It turns out that the fastest a human being has ever traveled was 39,897 kilometers per hour. That was the crew of the Apollo 10 mission returning to earth. That happened on 26 May, 1969.

Fifty-four years ago. We peaked more than half a century ago.
