The Halo Effect + that irritating human desire to blame someone for a tragedy.

@Burnt
The problem is what I don't understand is how was the company supposed to know a twister was going to come the direction? Natural disasters happen without warning and a good example of that is an earthquake. Are you going to blame management for keeping staff working if an earthquake suddenly hits? Are there going to be repercussions to the company for working in harsh conditions environmentally if a natural disaster literally comes out of the blue?

@Burnt
It seems like these people are looking for a direction of blame but can't find one in a case like this.

I know it comes off is a little bit harsh here but you can't find a direction of blame in something like this because nobody was forcing these people to work under these conditions, it's not like they knew a tornado was coming and despite knowing it ahead of time continue to work. This tornado hit out of nowhere and in a situation like this you're not going to have much warning.

@AzurusNova
Exactly, and to the company's credit... Factories are generally going to be safer places to shelter than homes. Threats to fire seem well intended. Granted, my friend's mom who worked at the candle company immediately fucked out of there when sirens started going. That turned out to be a wise decision, but only by chance. Tornado could have easily not taken down the factory, but hit her car on the drive home. There's no reason for reporting this like it's the fault of the company.

@Burnt
I will also note that a lot of Warehouse buildings generally have emergency procedure precautions in place for various situations. One of them happens to actually include tornadoes.

I'm including here on the flip chart here in my guard shack, we actually have instructions to follow in case of a tornado if it ever should happen.

If the people working at the warehouse didn't have the foresight or even the knowledge that a tornado is going to hit, I can't put the blame on the company.

A hurricane is a good reason for people to go home if they wish. Assuming the text from that Amazon worker is legit, they made them stay.

Easy for shit posters on fedi to mock people on a salary but with four kids at home the calculus becomes more fraught.

The moment you take away people's freedom to make their own choices you take responsibility for the consequences, like it or not.

Don't know much about this candle factory situation.

That's fair. I don't agree with keeping people against their will or anything, I just don't like this style of reporting. It's not helping anything.

@Burnt
The style of reporting is to drive up the emotions of people reading it. And that's exactly what it's trying to do.
@skells

@AzurusNova @skells
Yep. Exactly why I despise it. I just wanted to make it abundantly clear that I wasn't mocking any of the victims, I was mocking the courier journal.

@skells @AzurusNova
I got that from their Instagram, but I'm sure it's on courier journal's website, I just don't want to give them the clicks to get it. I can get information from my friend who's mom worked there if I really care to, but I just see this as a tragedy and want to leave them alone to process and recover.

Courier journal has become a real trash heap over the last 2 years.
