omg is that a heckin CROWN? I'll do whatever 'er majesty wants
@skells our present one another shadow on the wall of plato's cave. too many people want to get fooled by it.

@augustus

There exists in such a case a certain institution or law; let us say, for the sake of simplicity, a fence or gate erected across a road. The more modern type of reformer goes gaily up to it and says, “I don’t see the use of this; let us clear it away.” To which the more intelligent type of reformer will do well to answer: “If you don’t see the use of it, I certainly won’t let you clear it away. Go away and think. Then, when you can come back and tell me that you do see the use of it, I may allow you to destroy it.”

- G.K. Chesterton

@skells The people who cut off the head of Charles I didn't think this way, and the fake monarchy they installed in 1688 shouldn't be treated as the same thing. I used to appreciate Chesterton's fence but now I see it, and all of conservatism, as pure copes designed to cuck the right and prevent them from destroying things that benefit the left and tricking them into preserving standards and institutions erected by the left that only benefit the left.

@augustus check out Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France if you get the time

@skells check out Carlyle's Latter Day Pamphlets for why you shouldn't preserve dead lifeless shams just for the sake of it
@skells the monarchy certainly is a sham, so is liberal democracy. and it's called an "unwritten constitution" because it doesn't actually exist and is just whatever the particular elites in charge at any moment want to do

@lain @augustus it's worked for over a thousand years and, while due for one of its regular tune ups, I dig it

@skells @lain present regime has every incentive to portray itself as having a seamless continuity with historic regimes as it confers a greater sense of legitimacy to itself, but it doesn't always mean the link is real. I was posting earlier about how I don't buy the 'magna carta' narrative that people try to pass off in English political theogony

@augustus @lain our tradition is to slap the shit out of each other when we get out of hand while working hard to sit down at a table asap

kings queens, dukes, barons, capitalists and unions - it's a small island and we find a way to get along come what may.
