like, most of them are more like political commentators

@dave @neglesaks@mstdn.io do we have meaningful thinkers these days

In the realm of philosophy is there really anything left to explore?
@dave @neglesaks @skells Not in it's current paradigm. There are many lessons from modernity we haven't studied yet.

i get the sense that a lot of the people who might've been academic philosophers are working in AI, although academic philosphers and philosophers are a different breed in my mind

@skells @dave @neglesaks Academic philosophers aren't really philosophers, at least not in a historical context. Historically philosophers covered more common and universal topics, where as academic philosophers will concentrate on niche topics, like theory of mind, to justify their salaries.

The co-opting of academia by the left probably hasn't helped with this. It's easy to retreat to a politically non-volatile niche topic to avoid upsetting the wrong people.
