@JamesGleick It's a myth that the monarchy has no power. In reality they get tens of millions from tax payers and also get exemptions from laws such as equality legislation.

@skells @JamesGleick They cost at least tens of millions of pounds annually; the whole class system is based on the aristocracy being at the top with very little public scrutiny; the institution, by its nature is undemocratic; The monarch does not pay tax the same way as ordinary people do; the aristocracy own large chunks of land in the UK, which often is exempt from conservation and ecological legislation; they don't employ people under the same protection laws as other companies have to.
