You can totally do things in visual or text ways, but the effects on the audience will be different depending on which you choose.

It's up to the artist to decide which effect is most appropriate.

In film-making the main rule is "show don't tell" but sometimes telling without showing works really really well:

If they'd done this scene as a flashback it would have been immensely expensive but also perhaps not as emotionally moving.
