This is a recreation of a Twitter thread of my response to someone who said re: scientists moving to Mastodon: "Leaving the global community to enter a silo makes no sense."
I think this represents a common misconception about Mastodon! The entire point of federated social media is that it isn't a silo. On Twitter you are in a Twitter silo. On a Mastodon instance you can interact with anyone on ANY instance.

@gregeganSF - I may actually have versions of those 2 missing pictures; it's hard to be sure!
Quick #introduction!
I'm a researcher working on problems to do with deep learning and proteins at Microsoft Research New England. You'll see me post about interesting papers, pictures of food, and whatever else I'm interested in at the moment.
The resplendent quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno) is a small bird found in Central America. Males grow ostentatious tail feathers during mating season, that can reach up to one meter in length. Quetzal birds were considered sacred by the Aztecs and Incas, serving as a template for gods like Quetzalcoatl.
Or in short: They are very pretty to look at

I haven't done an #introduction so I guess I should introduce myself.
My name is Tom, I'm a #Data and #Cloud platform engineer at #NASA JPL and I've been slaving away there for the past 6 1/2 years.
I also enjoy educating, open science/data and #opensource software in my spare time.
I'm also #autistic to add to the entertainment.
I'm a #neuroscientist in Singapore using #zebrafish to understand appetite control and gut-brain signaling pathways. Check out my lab at www.carolineweelab.com. My other hobbies are hanging out with my two cats, rock climbing, and swimming, but the former is to me wayyy more fun than the latter two New to this app and still rather confused, but happy to try out something new!
Final thought:
If you are talking about classical mathematics, "proof by contradiction is unambiguous".
But if you are talking about constructive mathematics, it is potentially ambiguous, because, unfortunately, not everybody adopts the conventions of references (9.1) and (9.2) above. Which I quite like, but, on the other hand, there are two proof techniques that involve reaching a contradiction. They are different in constructive logic, but they amount the same in classical logic.

@pthenq1 @unabomber nada que un incremento a los impuestos no solucione.
I see that everyone is doing it, so here it goes...
#introduction I'm a Mexican mathematician, currently pursuing my #PhD at LSU. Although my interest are diverse and range over several topics, right now my main focus is on problems concerning spectral theory and applications to physics.
I'm hoping to post mostly math and physics-related stuff on here.
@Pat the only one from #MathTwitter, after its downfall, of course. In all honesty I wasn't really expecting someone to see that post, let alone respond to it. Oh well...
@cfiesler welcome to Mastodon! Taking opportunity of this, I would like to thank you personally for your videos about how to apply to PhD programs. Reaching out to potential advisors really helped my application! So, thanks again.
Since I'm pretty much the only one (besides John Baez), I shall declare this the start of the new #MathMastodon community. Hopefully more folks join eventually.
Math PhD student at LSU. Interest in spectral theory and PDEs.
