There's a project I'm interested in using IRC for coordination and it's a gigantic hurdle for me. Sure, I can connect, but when I do I see nothing. Great. I'll have to wait days to weeks with this browser tab open to get an idea of the community? Oh, come on. Yeah, I can DIY stuff, but why the hell should I need to in order to talk to people?!
Based on my experience (I didn't grow up with it) I'm not sure I'm a fan of IRC.
