@profan should there be a Mythic Quest board game / turn-based strategy game?
i feel like nothing ever truly prepared me for how much of professional game development is actually an extended game of diplomacy
forever attempting to tend to the needs of all on the project as much as those of the players of the eventual product 😬
Big news: I'm working with @criccomini on a second edition of Designing Data-Intensive Applications! An early release of the first 3 chapters is now available: https://learning.oreilly.com/library/view/designing-data-intensive-applications/9781098119058/ (O'Reilly Learning subscribers only at this point) and we're hoping to finish it next year.
The overall structure and philosophy remains unchanged, but we're bringing it up-to-date with new technical developments, and polishing the presentation with things we've learnt since I wrote the first edition a decade ago.

increasingly unhinged facts:
- there is an HBO documentary about bitcoin
- it shows some IRC logs from 2013
- the IRC logs are using the interface from a website i've been maintaining since ~2011
- the IRC messages in the HBO documentary aren't on my website
- because i've added the channel in 2015
- the screenshot of my website appears to have a bit of irssi edited into it using image manipulation software??
@whitequark real world NSFW spider-girl when
would you use bioengineering to turn your milk glands into glands that produce spider silk?

Practically speaking also, I reserve my right to simply be afraid enough of cars that I do not want to cycle around goddamn SAN DIEGO where one of my friends had a life-changing brain injury from being hit by a car on their bike. I hate these "be the change" takes and these "be brave about confronting cars" takes. Like, what?!? I'm Being The Change by staying alive??? Being scared of cars is sensible.
@grimalkina "In the coal mine, strive to be the canary" doesn't have quite the same inspirational ring to it.
Llama 3.2 is out, and it's a much more substantial release than the 3.1 to 3.2 version bump might indicate
Four new models, including Meta's first two vision models (11B and 90B) and two new text-only small models (1B and 3B)

RTO or GTFO? Last week, Amazon announced that starting in 2025, all employees will be in a physical office 5 days a week. While putatively to strengthen culture (as "the world's largest startup"), this is proving unpopular with many. Will other companies follow suit? On today's episode, @ahl and I are going to talk about remote work, RTO mandates -- and the physicality of both innovation and organization. Join us and share your perspective, 5p Pacific!
The latest xkcd made me wonder about dials being counterclockwise (as they are in the comic) vs. clockwise as I'm used to seeing. Is this a US thing?
@TomF I'm right handed and started having minor issues with my wrist while using a mouse - so about 15 years ago I started switching my mouse hand on my work machine to left and (back when we still went to offices) my home machine stayed mouse-right.
It took a few weeks to really get used to it, but it wasn't bad. And now I'm mouse-ambidextrous and generally free of wrist troubles.
