Is Mastodon 🦣 still a microblogging plateform or is starting to become a long form one ? Lately, I see more 4000 characters posts (instead of commonly 500). It's looks like a full blog post, no more a microblog. Or am I mistaken ? Example from @about.iftas.org@iftas.org and @LaurensHof #fediverse #mastodon
@twen @LaurensHof the post character limit is different depending on the instance. My Mastodon client shows only the beginning of such long posts by default. I feel like it's still mostly short posts though.

I was baffled by the complete lack of discussion of the politics of immigration in this article, but I guess that's economists for you...
(aside: automated check-in /passport check etc. is usually superior to the manned version, in all countries I've been to; this is likely linked to other factors than just labor costs, which are implied by using labor instead of an automated solution). https://www.cgdev.org/blog/why-are-geniuses-destroying-jobs-uganda
@coolbutuseless yep, this one works
While pulling these up I *also* pulled up this prediction thread from 2015 where I pretty much 100% nailed forecasting the death of the tech industry by way of venture-capital autoasphyxiation. Like not that it was *hard* to predict this because I was mostly describing a process already ongoing at that point, but boyyy did that process ever come to dominate

We produce some of the finest memory unsafe code in the world. Big code mines just digging up beautiful buffer overflows, factories turning out world-class use after frees. I spoke to someone and he said sir, those commie Europeans want to get rid of their data races, sir, but we make the best data races. Did you know that America made 15 of the top 20 most exploitable codebases in 2000 year? We're going to be bringing that back. No more woke languages. Good honest American C.
Introducing {mp4encoder} - an H.264/mp4 encoder for #RStats written in R itself!
https://github.com/coolbutuseless/mp4encoder
Features:
* Fast encoding e.g. 700fps for 800x600 native rasters
* Images may be RGB arrays or native rasters
* mp4 videos can be played on majority of OSs + browsers
* does not use 3rd party encoding libraries - meaning it will work anywhere you have R
* does all its encoding in R using {ctypesio} & {bitstreamio} for byte/bit manipulation
Caveat: it only writes uncompressed video
@coolbutuseless I'm on Android, on the Tusky Mastodon client. The one video that doesn't work is the 3rd one, that should show a grid of scatter plots (all I can see from the thumbnail, which is visible) - when I play it all I can see is green. I've had this problem with some YouTube videos in the past.
@lesondouble I'm not on bluesky, but I'm surprised that you see less politics there. I guess maybe it comes in waves, at slightly different times on different networks?

Found the patent for this, which doesn't give much away, but nevertheless intriguing https://patents.google.com/patent/US178611A/en
@thisweekinrust the latest Oxide and Friends is about various crates and might be a good addition to the newsletter https://share.transistor.fm/s/d3cea637
@b0rk I'm usually on windows / powershell, where this works.
I have to say I felt a bit uncomfortable not being able to check, as I'm on a phone and not next to a computer.
