Public Service Warning

Mastodon has a very big surge of new users right now. There's no way to tell if it will be sustained, but at this early point it looks similar to Nov 18 when when Musk pulled the employee purge.

It is very challenging for system administration to accommodate so many new users. If your server starts to struggle, it is not broken and will get sorted out.

We're all in this together. It's our social network. Be patient. What we are building is amazing.

Rick Scott told CNN that the reason Hershel Walker lost is because the Republicans don’t have an agenda.

Americans know the #GOP does, in fact, have an agenda, which is to make women vassals, eliminate Social Security, promote racism, extol radical Christianity, and overturn any elections they happen to disagree with.

Today I learned that https://mathstodon.xyz is an instance that supports LaTeX.

Back in 2009 Michael Nielsen introduced me to the wonderful Polymath project, https://blog.jonudell.net/2009/07/31/polymath-equals-user-innovatio/, which emerged from a similar tweak to WordPress.

I'm no mathematician but I am intensely interested in how adding such affordances enables people to work better together. If there's a good overview of how math discourse is happening on that instance I'd love to read it.

I’m noticing a lot of posts today from people saying twitter has finally become untenable.

The death of twitter won’t be as dramatic as we all figured last month, with the site crashing and never coming back.

It will be a slow passing, as more people hit their “now it’s untenable” point. And eventually, even the hard right wingers will leave, because what they crave isn’t an echo chamber, it’s MAKING US listen to them.

Topological magic trick: Draw a rectangular border around a piece of paper. Tell the audience member that they will be drawing a simple closed curve on the paper—the more complicated they make it, the better. It can (and should) go in and out of the border rectangle repeatedly. Inform them that "simple" means that it can't intersect itself and "closed" means it ends where it begins. Draw the first little bit of the curve to show them what you have in mind.

Yes, it's evil, he gets off on it, and it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. We do need to push back.

But we shouldn't be doing that on twitter. Anyone who's survived an abusive relationship knows the only thing that works is grey rock / no contact. We should be organizing here and depriving him of oxygen there. The quicker we all disappear, the sooner he turns on his (current) inner circle.

Just look at how Trump is withering now that all eyes are on Elon.

Twitter was free because we were the product of a marketing service.

Mastodon is free software but someone will have to pay the bill for the servers. When the server admins come asking for help, don't be offended and be ready to chip in
