Fedfree is live! fedfree.org/

Fedfree is a website aimed at teaching people how to run their own servers, of various kinds, on libre operating systems e.g. Linux and BSD. It aims to do this, using libre software exclusively, teaching people about the importance of libre software and hardware as it pertains to freedom; the right to use, study, adapt, share. The right to read. Universal access to knowledge… education. Education is the goal.

One tutorial so far, but more are coming.

The most telling reporting I’ve seen on Musk’s acquisition of the bird site, this article concisely lays out his financial backers. Should prompt anybody to depart the platform. wapo.st/3Wpbzlg (gift article, no paywall).

U.S. Police kill more than 1100 civilians annually—unprecedented in the developed world.

A new app called TurnSignl, built by Black civil rights lawyers, deescalates police interactions with civilians & get everyone home safe.

Here's how it works.
1. Download the app
2. When pulled over by police, face time a lawyer on demand via voice activation. The call is also auto recorded
3. The lawyer guides the convo.

Download TurnSignl here or gift it to a loved one for free: turnsignl.com/gift

Hello everyone! I am now on the @journa server, so hopefully this becomes my Mast forever home. If you want to get up to speed about why I'm finally getting active here, here's my piece from earlier this week on my Twitter suspension and the fallout from it. aaronrupar.substack.com/p/aaro

AI is way more exciting when used as a piano rather than a record player.

A record player removes the need for human input: it’s cheap and relatable, but ultimately it gives you predictable results. Sooner or later, it becomes background noise.

A piano augments human input: it presents a range of good options for creative expression. By making interesting and appropriate choices, an artist can use it to forge a deeper connection with their audience.

Timothy Gowers (@wtgowers) joined Mathstodon today! He won a Fields medal for his work on functional analysis, he helped spearhead the boycott of Elsevier, he's been letting his yard go wild, and he's generally interesting guy:

He hasn't actually posted anything here yet, but I'm hoping he will, since whenever he posts on Twitter it's worth reading.

Welcome to Al-Mutanabbi Street the ‘Book Market of Baghdad’, where books remain in the street at night because Iraqis say:

“The reader does not steal and the thief does not read.”

A thread on the rich heritage of the historic book market on Al-Mutanabbi Street…

1. This is an accurate description of oppo research and describes why oppo research did not discover the deceptions of Congressman-elect George Santos

But it skips over a larger problem: the Democratic Party's failure to invest and prioritize research

5. I'll add that Republicans have long taken a different approach to opposition research.

While Democrats utilize recent college graduates and interns, Republicans generally employ experienced lawyers to do oppo, at least for high-profile races

Don’t let anyone tell you Joe Biden is not an astute political operator. Inviting Zelenskyy to the White House and an address to a joint session of Congress smothers the runts of the political litter who want to abandon Ukraine.

Biden’s leadership has been nothing short of phenomenal as he’s helped build a global coalition to assist Ukraine.

Thank you Mr President.

Both funny and epic – Koji Fujimoto calculates the actual integer values that cause the famous 26-variable prime-generating polynomial to take the value 2.
