new master student managed to delete three month worth of stimulated data with one bash script set wrong. Of course we don't have a backup. I don't know whether to laugh or cry

Why not? I doubt he would make the same mistake twice, and if he does and something is lost again, then I really doubt the master student is the main person to blame ;)
@tfardet i know, and I think it'is not completely his fault because the script shoud have some kind of check before deleting files. Yet he did not follow istructions that were explained extensively to him and for which he had detailed documentation. So for now he can work on his own computer, when he'll need the data we'll double check his code.
I'm laughing mostly, but now he's not allowed to work on our hpc cluster anymore
