1. Turn off Sidewalk, Amazon's mesh network that allows devices to connect to each other
2. Turn off voice recordings

Yup! Koyu.space has a 16,384 character limit! 😎 😃
qoto.org has a 65,535 character limit! 😃
That's about Mastodon!

Most Pleroma instances have a 5000 character limit or higher.
blob.cat has 50,000;
Another instance, I forget the name of which has 5 million;
anime.website has 2.147 billion character limit! 🙃
😁
Not kidding at all!

@strawberryfieldsforever This is just one of the many reasons I dislike Mastodon. Back when I ran it, I used glitch-soc and set the limit to 2000 or something. Now that I'm on Pleroma, it's 5000 and I never have to worry about breaking my replies up into 3 different posts :comfy:

>The 500 character limit was strongly disliked at first but now we are accustomed to it and appreciate it for what it encourages.

I have no clue what it encourages, because my instance doesn't follow this limit :comfyuwu:

>Who determines whether a link is misleading?

Moderators? Admins? I have no clue, really.

>Did they fork before Eugen renamed 'toots' to 'posts'?

They seem to follow the upstream. Check out their github.

>Before he stopped subscribing new users to the Admins?

Whatever accounts new users are subscribed to is configured per instance.

@newt
The 500 character limit was strongly disliked at first but now we are accustomed to it and appreciate it for what it encourages.

You can split large post if needed.

Any valid PGP signature should not be included in the count, like domain names for instances are not included.

PGP elements should display differently to normal text so it doesn't attract attention.

Do you find the 500 character limit in Mastodon low?

(Of course Mastodon is meant to be a Micro-blogging site! 😃)

The last question reminds me of a college or job interview. 😐

I'd thought that I'd read up some of those newsletters I'd subscribed to today. 😐
Didn't do it till now.

The people who don’t want you to run your own servers are the ones who want to run the servers.

People will happily run their own servers if it’s so simple to do that they don’t even know they’re doing it.

A lot can be said about moxie's web3 post.

I'd like to consider just one sentence here.

"People don’t want to run their own servers, and never will."

First part is true. But why?

Even my grandma can install android apps. Apps have become so easy because big tech pushed for it to be. Big tech never developed the concept of set-top box-like homeservers, not in their interest. If pushed like apps, homeservers would be easy too!

People don't want to? They never were given a proper chance to!

@trinsec
My alt account's admin said that due to power outage, the instance will be down for a few days.

@drq @unlofl You might seed while you are watching but likely not unless you are watching something very popular.

The tradition is to give back at least as much as you got. This is what keeps p2p sharing running and allows things like PT to even exist.

"Seed what you watch" is useful for load distribution so the source can handle the demand but not much else.

@nanook thepiratebay.org still works.

Not sure who is really behind it now but magnet links are magnet links.
