literally everything about VOIP and SMS over internet is, and always has been, fucking terrible. I've been messing with it for years and it all sucks ass
VOIP.ms doesn't do SMS.
it appears the generic VOIP provider landscape (not tied to a specific smartphone app, etc) in 2021 is roughly equivalent to that of.... hmm perhaps 2018 I last looked into it? and 2016 I last actively used VOIP on a regular basis.
the only difference from then appears to be that Callcentric now supports SMS, poorly.
there must be so much fraud happening with generic VOIP/SMS providers, I'm now getting the third degree trying to sign up for VOIP.ms, presumably because I route all my traffic thru a DIY VPN and it's thus coming from a data center. they literally made me live chat with somebody to verify I'm human and are doing some kind of public records check I'm pretty sure (what else could they be doing?? all they have is name and address so far)
